Both peppermint and spearmint oils showed in vitro cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory effects against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated porcine alveolar macrophages. They were also found to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1b and TNF-a.

Furthermore, both mint oils exhibited strong antioxidant activities in DPPH and reducing power assays, which were accompanied by an inhibition of the growth of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli F18+ in vitro. This suggests that these oils could be useful candidates as feed additives due to their in vitro anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

In addition to the antioxidant activity of mint extracts, they have also been found to be an effective gastrointestinal stimulant. This is because they have been found to help regulate the bowel and prevent gas, bloating, nausea and indigestion.

Anti-inflammatory

In the present study, peppermint and spearmint oils were tested for their anti-inflammatory activities on porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs) by using MTT assays. Both oils reduced the production of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1b) and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) from PAMs in the presence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a bacterial mediator of inflammation. In addition, both mint oils were assessed for their antioxidant activity, a function that relies on their ability to scavenge free radicals and slow or inhibit autoxidation processes.

Both mint oils showed consistent antioxidative activity, as measured by their DPPH and reducing power assays. This is in line with Mint Extract previous studies that have shown similar antioxidative capacities for several mint species. In addition, both mint oils dose-dependently inhibited the growth of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli F18+ in vitro. These results suggest that these oils are effective candidate feed additives due to their in vitro anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities.

Antimicrobial

The aqueous extracts were screened using agar well diffusion method and compared statistically with streptomycine, a standard.

These results indicate that the aqueous extracts of mint and basil leaves are effective in controlling the growth of bacterial cells and inhibiting their growth to some extent but they could not completely remove all harmful bacteria from water. A pretreatment process such as filtration is required before use of these extracts to eliminate all bacteria from water and to ensure that it can be used without any negative effects on human health or the environment.

The aqueous extract of mint and basil leaves were also tested for their fungicidal properties against Penicillium citrinum and a range of other fungal pathogens. The aqueous extracts were found to be effective against these organisms, proving that they are an effective alternative to the conventional chemical antimicrobial agents.

Antispasmodic

Essential oils are thought to inhibit VDCCs because of the presence of certain monoterpenes, which have been characterized as potent antispasmodics.

Activation of potassium channels is another important mechanism used by antispasmodics to reduce muscle tension and relax smooth muscles. Inhibition of K+ ion channels leads to a decrease in the intracellular concentration of K+, leading to the deactivation of Ca2+ channels and thus smooth muscle relaxation [81].

A wide variety of botanical remedies are known for their antispasmodic activity, often combined with other therapeutic agents, such as calcium antagonists or opioid receptor modulators. Despite their clinical efficacy, these drugs can be associated with unpleasant side effects, which may lead to their limited use in medical practice. Hence, it is essential to find new molecules capable of alleviating spasms in order to avoid such undesirable side effects.

The present study was aimed to evaluate the antitoxigenic efficacy of aqueous mint extract (Mentha arvensis) and betel leaf extract (Piper betle) on the mycelial growth and citrinin production of Penicillium citrinum. The fungi were grown in YES medium to obtain spores and the aqueous extract of these plants was added in concentrations of 0.21, 0.42, 0.63 and 0.84 mg mL-1 into each flask.

At different concentrations of mint extracts the mycelium growth was inhibited and citrinin production was reduced. The maximum reduction in citrinin was observed at 0.84 mg mL-1 of the extract. Moreover, the cytotoxicity was also decreased with increasing the concentration of extracts.

These results indicate that the aqueous mint extract is effective as an inhibitor of citrinin synthesis in P. citrinum which may be beneficial for the preservation of food materials in storage. Further studies are necessary to understand the mechanism and the safety of the plant extracts.
