They discovered that a majority of locks sent passwords in plaintext, and even if they used sophisticated encryption techniques, Rose said, there was a way to intercept the data and change it without the user knowing.

In fact, he and his partner were able to break into some locks with as little as $10 in hardware and software. They uncovered vulnerabilities with brands Quicklock, iBlulock, Plantraco, Ceomate, Elecycle, Vians and Okidokey.

For instance, they discovered that four of the locks they tested transmitted their user passwords in plaintext. They also found that two of them sent their passwords twice, making it easy for a $100 Bluetooth sniffer to extract them and change them.

Thankfully, most smart locks are encrypted, and a good number use 128-bit AES. That makes them harder password door lock to hack, and there are also security measures that are built into the Bluetooth network itself that ensure only authorized ‘nodes’ can inject traffic.
