Care and Maintenance Of Vehicle Batteries

AGM batteries

Installation in the Vehicle:

  • Only remove the protective cap from the positive pole in the vehicle when connecting the pole clamp and place it on the pole of the removed battery to avoid short circuits.
  • Turn off the engine and all power consumers
  • Avoid short circuits caused by tools, for example
  • When removing, first disconnect the negative pole
  • Remove foreign objects from the battery’s footprint and clamp the battery firmly after inserting it
  • Clean the poles and clamps and grease them lightly with pole grease
  • When installing, first connect the positive poles and ensure that the pole chambers are firmly seated
  • Adopt add-on parts such as pole covers, degassing containers, elbows, hose connections, blind plugs, pole clamp holders from the first battery
  • Leave at least one gas outlet opening closed! This also applies to the return transport of the old battery.

Loading:

  • If the voltage is lower than 12.30 V, the battery should be recharged.
  • Only switch on the charger after connecting the battery and only switch off the charger after charging
  • Charging current recommendation: 1/10 ampere of battery capacity (Ah)
  • If the acid temperature exceeds 55°C, interrupt charging
  • The battery is fully charged when the acid density and charging voltage no longer increase within two hours
  • Check the acid level and correct with distilled water if necessary. Do not refill acid!

Charging Technology:

  • Lead-acid batteries should generally be charged using regulated chargers (e.g. CTEK). Regulated chargers are mandatory for sealed GEL or AGM batteries in order to avoid damaging the battery.
  • If unregulated chargers (not permitted for AGM and GEL batteries) are used, the charging current should not exceed 10-15% of the capacity (battery 10Ah = 1A max. 1.5A charging current) and the charging time should not exceed 10 hours. Monitoring the charge is mandatory to avoid damaging the battery. (Note gassing – loss of electrolyte)
